Lael Pagano Professor Crews ENG 205: Literature of the Western World 25 February 2017 A Profile on the Blind Sinner How can one commit a life that’s dedicated to self-righteousness, incest, and murder? Scripture reveals that sinners’ â€Å"hearts† become â€Å"insensitive† to their evil deeds as â€Å"their ears† grow â€Å"dull and their eyes dim† (New American Standard Bible, Isa. 6:10). A sinner blinded by his own thinking and intellect is unaware of certain consequences and his instability until he’s convicted. Like Oedipus, his luxurious life as king of Thebes contributed to his hardheaded, pompous character, as well as his cursed destiny. In his tragedy, â€Å"Oedipus the King† (430 B.C.), Sophocles uses Oedipus’ stubborn personality to illustrate the†¦show more content†¦2:14). Similarly, Tiresias steps in to symbolize the â€Å"knowledge of sin† and its consequences that through his power to utter truth, he convicts Oedipus of his wickedness by saying his own â€Å"luck is what des troyed† him (Rom. 3:20; Sophocles, 35). Still, Oedipus’ stubborn heart sticks to what he believes is true, that he is wise, gifted, and worthy of all he’s received. Thus, his sinfulness manipulated him to â€Å"believe what is false†, and deny what is true (2 Thess. 2:11). Oedipus is quick to blame others for the murder of Laios, instead of examining himself, as sinners blame others for problems. Once he learns of the murderer, he is persistent to unmask the suspect of the crime, yet overlooks his own decree that he’s â€Å"a stranger both to the crime and to accounts of it† (Sophocles, 21). Oedipus appears most concerned about discovering the killer than he’s aware of the acts he committed beforehand. Hence, he fails to recognize his faults, due to his â€Å"impurity†; also, as a king of high praise, Oedipus has never been accused of anything, including murder (Rom. 1:24). Sudden offence hits Oedipus; putting blame on Kreon mad e sense in â€Å"his own† sinful â€Å"nature†, despite his oblivion (John 8:44). The Royal Proclamation of 1763 The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III after the gain of French territory resulting from the French and Indian war. The proclamation prohibited the settlement of the land beyond the appalachian mountains in order to maintain peace with Indians and to prevent further casualties. Although the proclamation was made with the intention of protection the colonists, the colonists viewed it as oppression. It angered the colonists who wished to expand into new farmlands, as they believed that they, â€Å"...purchased the land with their blood in the most recent war† (The American Pageant, 113). The first person attended a prestigious and highly academic university, had years of work experience in the field and, in the mind of the employer, had the potential to make a positive impact on the companys performance. The second person was just starting out in the field and seemed to lackthe ambition that was visible in his opponent. Who was chosen for the job? you ask. Well, if the story took place before 1964, the answer would be obvious. However, with the somewhat recent adoption of the social policy known as affirmative action, the answer becomes unclear. After the United States Congress passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964,it became apparent that certain business traditions, such as seniority status and aptitude tests, prevented total equality in employment. Then President, Lyndon B. Johnson, decided something needed to be done to re medy these flaws. On September 24, 1965, he issuedExecutive Order #11246 at Howard University that required federalcontractors to take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed . . . without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin (Civil Rights). When Lyndon Banes Johnson signed that order, he enacted one of the most discriminating pieces of legislature since the Jim Crow Laws were passed. Affirmative action was created in an effort to help minorities leap the discriminative barriers that were ever so present when the bill was first enacted, in 1965. At this time, the country was in the wake of nationwide civil-rights demonstrations, and racial tension was at its peak. Most of the corporate executive and managerial positions were occupied by white males, who controlled the hiring and firing of employees. The U.S. government, in 1965, believed that these employers were discriminating against minorities and believed that there was no better time than the present to bring about change. When the Civil Rights Law passed, minorities, especiallyAfrican-Americans, believed that they should receive retribution for the years of discrimination they endured. The government responded by passing laws to aide them in attaining better employment as reprieve for the previous two hundred years of suffering their race endured at thehands of the white man. To many, this made sense. Suppor ters ofaffirmative action asked, why not let the government help them get better jobs? After all, the white man was responsible for their suffering. While this may all be true, there is another question tobe asked. Are we truly responsible for the years of persecution thatthe African Americans were submitted to?The answer to the question is yes and no. It is true that the white man is partly responsible for the suppression of the African-American race. However, the individual white male is not. It is just as unfair and suppressive to hold many white males responsible for past persecution now as it was to discriminate against many African-Americans in the generations before. Why should an honest, hard-working, openminded, white male be suppressed, today, for past injustice? Affirmative action accepts and condones the idea of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Do two wrongs make a right? I think mother taught us better than that. Affirmative action supporters make one large as sumption when defending the policy. They assume that minority groups want help. This, however, may not always be the case. My experience with minorities has led me to believe that they fought to attain equality, not special treatment. To them, the acceptance of special treatment is an admittance of inferiority. They ask, Why cant I become successful on my own? Why do I need laws to help me get a job? These African Americans want to be treated as equals, not as incompetents. In a statement released in 1981 by the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Jack P. Hartog, who directed the project, said:Only if discrimination were nothing more than the misguided acts of a few prejudiced individuals would affirmative action plans be reverse discrimination. Only if todays society were operating fairly toward minorities and women would measures that take race, sex, and national origin into account be preferential treatment. Only if discrimination were securely placed in a well-distant past would affirmative action be an unneeded and drastic remedy. Purple Rose Of Cairo Movie Response Overall I felt this was a very enjoyable movie, which came as a surprise to me. I am not a huge fan of Woody Allen, but I must say that I thought this was the best work that I have seen from him. The opening scene with Cecilia at work in the diner draws an immediate parallel to the Valentino pieces we read. She is discussing with her co-worker the intimate details of the life of one of a movie star, almost as if she were one of his family members. This is very closely related to how America felt when Valentino died. People who had never met the actor wept and went to pay their respects to the dead actor because they felt a closeness with him. I really like the whole human aspect that Woody Allen used in portraying Ceclia's life. He basically defined the theatre as a way for her to leave a life, which for the most part was bad, for a few hours. She had an abusive, disinterested husband and was having a tough time at work. All this coupled with the fact that it was the Depression era in American history make Cecilia's life extremely difficult. All of these problems, however, disappeared once Cecilia entered the movie theatre. I liked this because this is how many people feel. When you are bored, lonely, etc. you can pop in a movie and almost get away from the real world. I thought the whole idea of the Tom Baxter character walking off the screen was not only funny but brilliant. We have seen movies where people go into the screen, as in last week's Sherlock, Jr., but rarely do we see an actor leave the screen. I thought Jeff Daniels did an excellent job in portraying both Baxter and the real actor in the film, Gil Shepherd. In discussing this aspect of the film, I also thought that Allen's use of explaining fact and fiction was great. Through the Tom Baxter character Cecilia began to understand that the movies, although a great escape, were not real and that life is difficult weather you are an actor or a poor working class woman like herself. In the end, it was almost like a test in school when Cecilia had to choose between the two and she realized that Gil was a real person while Tom Baxter was just a character in a movie. One example of one of the lessons that taught this in the film was when Baxter and Cecilia were having a lavish meal with champagne, etc. When the bill came Baxter whipped out his money like he was a rich man, when in fact all he had was movie money - which had no use in the real world. They ended up having to run out on the bill. Soon after this detail was brought up again when Baxter gave a bum waiting in line at the Soup Kitchen a bill. The poor person looked at the money almost confused and then threw it on the ground. Another great example was when Cecilia was in the church trying to explain to Baxter about God, because he had no idea about it and thought that the writers of the movie were God. The scene further emphasized the difference between the movies and reality when Baxter and Monk got into a fight. Baxter's character was written with the ability to fight a fair fight, however he was not prepared for the roughhouse street tactics of Monk. Despite getting beaten up, Baxter was completely fine because his character was not written with the ability to get hurt. I think that the Purple Rose of Cairo did a lot to refute many of the beliefs of the Adorno and Horkheimer article. The whole concept of mass customization really did not play into this film. I thought that the movie itself really gave off a sense of individuality in that there are not any other films like this around. I also felt that the ending of the film directly refuted the point made in the article about everyone has to behave in accordance with previously determined and indexed level.

What I Didnt Learn In High School essays I didnt know that when I started to read, Lies My Teacher Told Me, by James W. Loewen and A Peoples History of the United States 1492 Present, by Howard Zinn that I was going to get so interested in the subject of history. In my high school years, back in the late 1970s the early 1980s I didnt take to well to learning history. Either it was too slow of a subject for me then, or not an interesting enough teacher to teach the subject, history. Whatever the reason, fast forward twenty-three years and put the book and instructor in front of me and Ill find an interest in the subject being taught. I believe the American Indian Policy was caused by the 1840s Manifest Destiny. The Manifest Destiny has us to believe that the white people are the better race. It goes to say that God loves the white people and that the white people are his chosen ones, his Christians. Being Gods people that puts us above every race and better than everyone else. We lived by our own rules and had our own authority. This is similar to the American Indian Policy. The Indians had no set of rules, laws, or terms. They were different to us, in color and life style. That scared the white people. Whenever someone is different from the other, one always wants to bring down the different one to feel superior. So we hated them. The lectures Ive sat in on in the past never told me about the unjust way the white people treated the Indians. Ive always heard Indians are bad and they are savages, and that the white people are the greatest of race. There is a lot that I havent learned about the Indians. Why is that? With that objective in mind, Jefferson first proposes "general diffusion of knowledge," as in the provision of public education to all citizens. Within the context of public education, the subjects which should be taught are reading, writing, arithmetic and history. Beyond the parameters of a curriculum whose goal is the promotion of numerical and linguistic literacy, Jefferson proposes that the more advanced, the more talented of the students receive a higher education at the expense of the taxpayers. The subjects which should be taught should be reflective of enlightenment and reason. These subjects are "anatomy, medicine, modern languages, and science." The selection of these subjects is predicated on Jefferson's belief that they promote practical and useful kn owledge. Opposed to the "tyranny of the traditional curriculum," Jefferson's education plan revolves around three core objectives. The first is the propagation of knowledge for the purposes of developing a literate, knowledgeable populace who is capable of constructively contributing to the nation's growth and advancement. The second is a more intensive and focused period of higher education, provided at the taxpayers' expense, to those who have displayed intellectual talent and who have the potential to constructively contribute to national advancement. The subjects that these students will be taught are practical, useful and determined by their inclinations. The third core principle upon which Jefferson's education plan is founded is the exclusion of religion from educational system in response to the "tyranny of religious dogma" and the extent to which it functions as an obstacle to the promotion of investigative inquiry, knowledge and critical thinking. It need be noted that despite the fact that Jefferson's own educational experience left much to be desired, his education was typical of his peers. At first, he was educated by his father and taught basic literacy and survival skills. Following that, he was educated in a family schoolhouse by both secular and teachers and churchmen. At this point, his education was traditional and focused on the classics. As he explains, fear was the primary motivator in his education; fear of being beaten by his teacher. Added to that, from Jefferson's perspective, his education, while typical of that of his contemporaries, was impractical. I had to spend a lot in groceries in March-a total of $272.78 (reflecting 45.19% of the total amount spent on groceries for the term) because I fell ill and the doctors recommended taking more than four meals a day to cater for energy loses. April’s grocery expenses were much less since I had begun cutting on my budget. Grocery expenses in April were $151.99 (25.18%) and $178.86 (29.63%) in February. I am capable of cutting more on grocery expenses by 10% in May because I have identified the stores that sell similar products at lower prices. Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them. It may be important to observe a child but at the same time it may mislead you into being judgmental, too soon. For instance, if you observe a child misbehaving, not getting along with the other children or talking back to the teacher, you might get the impression that he/she is a 'bad' child and you might treat and act differently with that particular child. From my personal experiences, I have to come to the conclusion that it doesn't always work the way I believe when observing a child. I strongly feel that in order to get to know a child you should not spend most of your time observing him/her. Interacting with the child gives off better results. Not once or twice, this should be a consistent thing. For example, in room seven we have a child by the name of Thomas which most of us have heard about him. He appears to be very aggressive and angry from what we have observed. Even though the child may be difficult at times, I cannot turn my back on him and give up because of this. We can only observe what lies in front of us. No one really knows what goes on when the child is home with his parents.
